Depression

This is more than just sadness.

To be clear, you do feel sad… even if you’re wearing a smile on the outside.

You’ve felt sad before, but this is something more…

This is lingering. It’s deeper… darker… like you’re mired in thick mud, and you’re looking at rain clouds above.

It feels like it’s been here forever – like it’ll be here forever.

And then there’s the hopelessness…

Do you feel like nothing is going on inside – like you’re hollow?

It’s like this is the best life will get – that you’ll never have it better… ever. And that’s a painful prospect.

You cry. Maybe not when people can see you. But maybe you wish they would…

At least someone could ask you how you’re doing.

This road gets really dark… really quick.

You get to where you don’t want to do anything with anyone anymore.

You remember a time in your life when you felt so full of life, but now it feels like there’s nothing.

It’s not long before you feel worthless, like you don’t even matter.

You may have even thought, “What’s the point of being here anymore?”

Depression can come from anywhere…

Maybe you’ve lost a loved one, have a negative view of yourself, or have had some difficult life circumstances.

I’ve been there myself. Right now, I’m typing this through tears of gratitude because I remember what it was like to feel this way. For years, I remember feeling like nothing was going to change.

I was so deep in the dark hole of depression that it never crossed my mind to look for a way out. The mud was absolutely up to my neck, and the skies were drenching me with rain.

But now, I’m on the other side of it… and you can be, too.

You don’t have to go through this alone… because you’re not.

I’m here to help you figure out what’s going on – why you’re feeling the way you are. My goal is to help you move that rain cloud and push that mud all the way down. I want to help you step forward into a life unencumbered by the depression that has held you down.

We’ll use Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to help discover the nature of your concerns during therapy.

We rarely want to address the events in our life that cause the most pain. I understand. When I first began as a therapist, I felt as though I had to rush the client and learn everything right then and there. I’ve since moved away from that practice.

Now, I allow the client complete autonomy. I’ll prompt, but you’ll guide. Don’t worry; I won’t let us get stuck, and I’ll work hard to keep us on track and focused on our goal – which we’ll create together.

Some clients want to know the ins and outs of what’s causing them to feel the way they feel, while others just want to learn how to cope. Whether you’re the former or the latter, this process will work for you. Together, we’ll look at what’s happening in your life that brought you to therapy, and we’ll set goals for what you’d want to see by the end.

We’ll look at your reactions to what’s happening and see if any patterns keep you stuck. It’s these patterns of thinking and acting, recognized or not, that keep us right where we are. Then, we’ll look at strategies and methods for confronting these ways of thinking and acting, addressing them directly, and resolving them.

I use CBT while working with clients who struggle with depression because I have seen the changes myself. Clients that have walked into my practice head hanging low with tears in their eyes have walked out with their heads held high. Clients who have come in with no idea what their futures held walked out with a new sense of purpose and vision. Clients who no longer saw the point in living lived on.

I get it… life certainly gets hard.

We get stuck in the mud so thick we can’t move no matter how hard we try.
